LAI Yunfan

D.Phil. Student in Linguistics

Hi, my name is Lai Yunfan. I study linguistics at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3. I'm currently working on my D.Phil. thesis on a Rgyalrongic language, namely Wobzi Khroskyabs (previously Lavrung). Every Thursday, I laugh at Tottenham Hotspur. When I die, I'd like to burn in hell.

I started my fieldwork in the pleasant summer of 2010. It was my first trip to the mysterious Rgyalrong world. It took me some time to understand Southwestern Mandarin, and I was sure it would take me a life time to fully understand the language of local Tibetans.

A linguistic fieldwork is all about documenting languages: from its basic phonological system to traditional story analyses. I started by recording short stories and asked my Tibetan partners to translate them morpheme by morpheme. I plan to publish a grammar, a dictionary and a story collection.

It is not easy to find someone suitable for the work. Luckily, I met Rig'dus Lhamo. She is a wonderful teacher, speaking both Chinese and Khroskyabs fluently. It's really a pleasure to work with her. Besides scientific purposes, fieldwork allows me to make new friends and discover a different culture.

My fieldwork is sponsored by CRLAO and MEXT/JSPS Overseas Fieldwork Grant.
